Security measures for swimming
We have received some questions concerning swimming in the river Rhine, particularly about the security.
Here please find all our security measures and important information for swimming at a glance:
- Half of the river Rhine (the inner section of the river bend) will be closed for ship traffic.
- At the swim start and finish there will be timings mats so that we can trace how many people went into the water.
- The German lifeguard association [Deutsche Lebens-Rettungs-Gesellschaft (DLRG)] will escort the swimmers with boats in the middle of the Rhine and will have staff on land along the complete swim course.
- In addition canoe clubs will accompany the starters field with boats.
- Wet suits will be mandatory for all participants.
- Behind the swim finish a DLRG team will be ready to assist in case someone will miss the swim finish.
- The waterways and shipping office (Wasserstraßen- und Schifffahrtsamt Rhein) approved the race.
- The water police will secure the race on the Rhine.
- You will swim downstream. 😉
As organizers, we offer you a safe framework for swimming in the Rhine with the above measures. However, it also requires responsible handling by you athletes in order to provide you with a unique and safe experience in the Rhine. We therefore urge you to observe the following instructions for swimming in the Rhine:
- Just make sure you are sufficiently trained for the start!
- Neoprene is compulsory for all participants!
- Wear your timing transponder on your left ankle and the swimming cap issued by us!
- Swimming goggles offer you a better view!
- Keep a sufficient distance from the shore (approx. 10 m)!
- All bridges may only be swum across between the right bank of the Rhine (in the direction of swimming on the right!) and the first bridge pier!
- Towards the middle of the river, the DLRG boats and canoeists limit the swimming course!
- Orientate yourselves to the shore in good time before the exit (our white and red beach flag announces the exit)!
- At the exit, swim as close to the shore as possible until your hands touch the ground!
Hint: It is permitted to wear a non-inflated(!) life buoy on your belt while swimming. However, as soon as this is triggered, you will be disqualified from the competition.
Swim starts:
The MD and OD will start in Deutzer Hafen, while the SD will start at Deutzer Brücke. Please access the pontoon via stairs.
For MD and OD there will be a water start in starting blocks of a maximum of 300 persons. The MD will take a turn in the inner harbour before entering the river Rhine. The OD will leave the harbour directly into the Rhine.
The SD will kick off with a rolling start directly into the Rhine.
